- Abstract
Historically cities have been passive observers of innovation. They have been customers and consumers, places for large companies to sell products and solutions to.
Today’s cities face unprecedented challenges, climate change, productivity level decline, jobs creation etc…
Cities don’t have to be passive when it comes to innovation. And they don’t have to wait for innovation to happen around them. A smart, agile city, and innovative city, can provide the opportunities and challenges for innovators to focus on solving. Cities can become key players in the creation of the innovation, companies, and jobs of tomorrow to solve the challenges of today.
The UK has seen a large devolution of powers, decision making and financial responsibility to the cities and regions as part of it’s leveling up and city deal programmes. There has been a big focus on empowering cities and regions to become active players in the innovation ecosystem.
